Twitter: The Whats, Whys and Hows
You may have heard by now that as a business, you should be using Twitter as a marketing tool. Many people, however, are unsure as to what exactly Twitter is, how it works and why they should use it. So here I have broken it all down for you. Read on to learn about one of the most important and vitalizing social media platforms that doubles as a unique tool to grow your brand!
WHAT EXACTLY IS TWITTER?
Twitter is a social networking and microblogging service that enables its users to send and read text-based messages of up to 140 characters, known as “tweets”. It is one of the top 10 sites visited on the internet and has been called the “SMS of the Internet”.
HOW IT WORKS
Twitter can be overwhelming because it’s the equivalent, at times, of standing in a large room and having 50 people yelling things at you but at its core, the concept is simple. Create your Twitter profile by picking a name, a handle (@____________), uploading a profile picture and posting a short (140 characters or less!) bio plus your website. Then search for followers by finding people who are interested in your product, have something in common with you or your company or live in the area that you are servicing. Finally, tweet something every day or every other day. Try not to inundate with information because it will seem too spammy but do tweet about your company, your employees, your most recent company fun day, photos from work and respond to other’s tweets with questions or comments or even retweet (tweet what they tweeted – it’s akin to a “like” on Facebook).
WHY YOU SHOULD USE TWITTER
Twitter is excellent for branding in that you can reach millions of followers with one simple message and it’s easy to get people’s attention because you can directly tweet to them. These tweets show up in their notifications and they also receive emails saying that you tweeted at them. Because of the microblogging aspect, some do find it harder to use but with 140 characters or less, you can come up with unique ways to get your message across!
